Why should this movie matter to you? How does this involve you? Well, to be quite honest, if you have ever turned on a television or sat in a movie theater, you are already a participant in the universe of entertainment. A passive participant perhaps, but a participant all the same.

Most people underestimate the role they play in the “business” of “show”. If you fall into the category of “audience”, you play a significant role. If there is no audience, there is no one watching. If there is no one watching, there is no need to create a narrative film, documentary, or television show. If there is no need to create, there is no need to inform or entertain. If there’s no need to inform or entertain…well, you get the picture – and it’s a bleak one.

Why you? Because you have an opportunity to be more than just a passive participant. You have the opportunity to actively join in the creation of an independent film. How many people can say they’ve done that?

Whether it’s a tax-deductible donation of $25.00 or $25,000.00, forwarding this email to 25 people, partaking in an investment opportunity that promises an ROI if the film is successful, or providing an in-kind donation of some sort like snacks and food, bottled water, transportation, or a filming location…the opportunities are limitless.

Here’s the bottom line: WITHOUT your help? The film won’t happen. It’s as simple as that. The clock is ticking – we want to start filming in three months and so far, we’re about 25% funded, 14% of which has come from money our director, co-executive producer and I have invested out of our own pockets.

Not convinced yet? If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of Kate Hugo: Diamond Detective Agent, let me give you a (not so) brief run-down.

I like to say that KHDDA is “Knives Out” meets “The Book of Eli” meets “The Sixth Sense”, and here’s the reason why. First, it’s a murder mystery with a cast of interesting characters. Secondly, it’s set in a post-cataclysmic world in the not-too-distant future. And finally, there’s an element of the supernatural woven within the story.

Imagine trying to solve a robbery and murder without any of the technology we’ve come to depend on. We panic when we can’t find our cellphones, and complain when our internet speeds are too slow, but what if:

·      Suddenly all satellites were disabled?

·      There’s NO internet service?

·      NO cellphone service?

·      NO GPS?

·      And even more scary – you flip on the light switch and there’s no electricity. Your refrigerator and freezer are dead. The gas pumps and ATM’s don’t function anymore.

Scientists have been warning us for decades of the potential dangers of geomagnetic storms (huge coronal/sun eruptions of energy), but like the “big one” (earthquake) that is long overdue along the San Andreas fault, we choose to assume it will never happen in our lifetime and we go merrily along, living our lives.

But geomagnetic storms happen more frequently than you might think.

·       In August of 1972 a severe geomagnetic storm disrupted electrical and communications networks and satellites, and spontaneously detonated numerous U.S. Navy sea mines in North Vietnam.

·      In March of 1989 a geomagnetic storm caused the collapse of the Hydro-Quebec power grid, and six million people were left without power for over 9 hours – but it was a relatively mild flare.

·      17 major flares erupted from the Sun between October 19th and November 5th of 2003, resulting in an extreme worldwide radio blackout.

·      Scientists predict that if the earth is subject to another storm of the same magnitude of one that occurred in 1859 (the Carrington Event) – satellites and electrical grids all over the world would be devastated.

So, now that you're sufficiently spooked, let’s get back to Kate Hugo and solving crime in a world where we’ve effectively been thrown back into the pre-technology world of the 1800s. This is the world of Kate Hugo: Diamond Detective Agent. For electricity, we depend on generators, wind, and solar power. Rural communities are more accustomed to living off the grid, so they fare much better in this new world than large cities. Millions of people (especially in larger cities) die from a lack of clean water, food, heat, cooling, riots, and anarchy.

Your digital money is gone. While the Federal government struggles to rebuild our Nation’s infrastructure, we have reverted to a cash and barter system of commerce. Within 3 years after the “event”, every small town in America has its own “bank” and the Feds have established a special task force of agents to protect the newly formed state-run banking system. Kate is one of those “Diamond” Agents. Her unique experience places her in a position of power to oversee the security of the banks in the state of Arizona and solve any crimes committed therein. The world as it exists requires innovative investigative techniques and Kate loathes traditional law enforcement strategies.

Arivaca, Arizona is home to one of those banks. It has been robbed, the teller murdered, and Kate is sent to investigate. It’s a crime similar to another that remains unsolved. Could the same person be responsible for both?

A recent tragedy haunts Kate daily and reinforces the walls of cynicism and animosity that protect her broken heart. A local clairvoyant’s ability to sense her pain rocks her firmly-held skepticism. A by-the-book Sheriff fights his own personal demons and is irritated to play second fiddle to Kate and participate in her unconventional methods of investigation.  Can Kate and the Sheriff overcome their distrust of each other?

Small towns hold big secrets and the community of Arivaca is no different. There is no shortage of suspects, each having a unique motive to rob the bank. Each suspect is inextricably involved with the other. The teller’s sister can sense that something bad is about to happen, but her warnings go unheeded. The bank manager refuses to offer loans, forcing residents to borrow money from a dangerous man who lives on the edge of the law. The teller’s best friend is behaving suspiciously. The local handyman would do anything to please his wife and proprietress of the local bed and breakfast. Could that include stealing from the bank and leaving no witness?

Soon after the crime, people claim to see the teller’s ghost. Is the victim returning from the dead to identify his killer? Or is Kate responsible for the strange sightings that cause the criminal to confess? Or could it be both?

Intrigued? I hope so.
